THE MOST FAVORITE PLACE

Kilimanjaro, Tanzania

Kilimanjaro, standing at 5,895m, holds the title of being the highest point in Africa. This volcanic massif is a majestic sight, towering above the plains below, with its snow-capped peak dominating the savannah landscape. Surrounding the mountain is a lush mountain forest, home to a variety of mammals, including several endangered species.

Animals

Large animals are rare on Kilimanjaro and are more frequent in the forests and lower parts of the mountain. Elephants and Cape buffaloes are among the animals that can be potentially hazardous to trekkers.

Climate

The climate of Kilimanjaro is influenced by the height of the mountain, which allows the simultaneous influence of the equatorial trade winds and the high altitude anti-trades, and by the isolated position of the mountain.

Safety Trip

Though the climb is not technically as challenging as the Himalayas or Andes, the high elevation, low temperature, and occasional high winds can make Kilimanjaro a difficult trek. Acclimatization is required, and even experienced and physically fit trekkers may suffer some degree of altitude sickness.

The dry season in Tanzania typically commences in early June and extends until the conclusion of October. Following this, the ‘short rains’ arrive from late October to early November, lasting until mid to late December. Subsequently, there is a break from late December to mid-March, before the onset of the ‘long rains’ in late March, which persist until May.

It is important to note that weather patterns can fluctuate annually, necessitating readiness for any unforeseen changes in the climate.

Tanzania has been classified as a low-risk country by the World Health Organization due to the absence of any isolated cases of the Yellow fever virus within its borders. However, the presence of Yellow fever vectors and favorable ecological conditions in the country pose potential risks if the virus is introduced. Additionally, Tanzania’s proximity to Yellow fever endemic countries increases its vulnerability to infection.

In order to comply with the requirements of the International Health Regulations (IHR), 2005 and ensure the protection of public health in Tanzania, it is mandatory for travelers arriving from Yellow fever-endemic countries to receive Yellow fever vaccination. This requirement also extends to travelers who have been subjected to long flight connections (transit) in Yellow fever-endemic countries for a duration of twelve hours (12 hours) or more.

Indeed, Tanzania is home to mosquitos due to its tropical climate. It is advisable for visitors to consult a medical professional well ahead of their trip to obtain guidance on antimalarial medication, as these courses typically need to commence prior to the start of your visit. Additionally, it is recommended to carry mosquito repellent and dress in neutral-colored or khaki clothing. Certain accommodations may offer anti-mosquito measures like mosquito nets or spraying repellent in your sleeping area.

To prevent the annoyance of these biting flies, opt for clothing in neutral colors such as khaki, beige, green, olive, or light brown, as these flies are drawn to bright colors. While the majority of individuals experience no negative effects from their bites, a small number may experience itchiness and swelling.

The tsetse fly predominantly inhabits woodland regions in Tarangire and specific areas of Serengeti. These flies are most active during the daytime.

It is essential for all visitors to ensure they have sufficient travel insurance prior to their departure for Tanzania. The insurance policies should provide comprehensive coverage, including medical evacuation, cancellation, curtailment of arrangements, and loss of baggage, for any unforeseen circumstances.

The majority of accommodations are able to process payments through credit cards. However, if you prefer to pay in cash, it is recommended to use US Dollars. Please be aware that US Dollar Bills dated before 2009 will not be accepted. For credit card payments, ensure you have either a MASTERCARD or VISA card on hand.
